Heat Stress Protection Becomes Mandatory for Outdoor Workers From December 2026
From 1 December 2026, four heat stress measures that used to be recommended practice become mandatory for employers with outdoor workers.
- Heat stress training for exposed workers.
- Cool drinking water available near work areas.
- Cold water, ice packs or a water spray on hand for emergencies.
- Suitable heat-protective clothing supplied to workers.
MOM is also now recommending — though not yet mandating — shaded rest areas that are well ventilated or cooled. Employers have three months from the announcement to get these in place.
Minister of State Dinesh Vasu Dash flagged heat stress as “an increasingly important workplace safety and health issue, particularly for workers carrying out outdoor work” — these enhancements sit alongside existing rules on temperature monitoring, hydration and emergency planning.
If you run a business with staff on rooftops, construction sites, or delivery routes, this is one to action before December, not after an incident forces the issue.
